Prehistoric Jewelry
The first known examples of jewelry date back to about 75,000 years ago, when humans used shells, snail shells, ostrich egg shells, animal teeth, claws, and bones to make necklaces, bracelets, and pendants1. These materials were readily available in nature and did not require much processing. They were also symbolic of the animal world and the forces of life and death.
